Dating back to the 15th Century, terrazzo has advanced through the years. New developments in epoxies, polyesters, latex and other materials have expanded installation methods, which now include precast terrazzo, cementtious terrazzo and thin-set epoxy terrazzo. Overview of Epoxy Terrazzo Installations

Epoxy terrazzo is favored by construction professional today for meeting today’s sustainability and design goals. Since its breakthrough in the 1970s, an epoxy terrazzo installation has many advantages over a cementitious terrazzo installation. Advantages of this system includes:

• Durable, translating to the lowest life-cycle cost of any terrazzo system
• Fastest pour to cure time
• Excellent stain and chemical resistance
• Excellent high impact and thermal-shock resistance
• Nonporous finish that does not support microbial growth

Epoxy terrazzo is ideal for areas with high foot traffic such as schoos, airports and hospitals. There are plenty of design opportunities as well. Doyle Dickerson Terrazzo can install a seamless one-color terrazzo floor or install an epoxy terrazzo floor incorporating a logo or combination of colors.

Overview of Cement Terrazzo Installations

Cement terrazzo is a traditional flooring system that can be installed as well. Cement terrazzo is ideal for exterior applications and for renovation projects where a vapor barrier is not present beneath the slab. This system is thicker and weighs more than an epoxy terrazzo system; however, shares similar qualities in low maintenance and durability. According to the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association, a sand-cushion system is considered the best cement-based system to install.

Overview of Precast Terrazzo Installations

Precast terrazzo is a slab created and then transported to the construction site for installation. Doyle Dickerson Terrazzo workers with precast manufacturers to install stair treads, countertops, wall panels and other precast terrazzo products for commercial, institutional and residential projects.

Precast terrazzo offers the same aesthetic beauty seen with epoxy and cementitious terrazzo installations. Because precast terrazzo is manufactured off-site in a controlled environment, it takes a shorter time to complete the installation.

It is important to address moisture issues prior to a floor installation. Moisture present in the later stages of the floor’s lifecycle can cost building owners thousands of dollars.
