ABOUT THE TERRAZZO FLOORS AT CDIA Concourse A Expansion Phase II:

Phase II of the Concourse A Expansion at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) adds 200,000 square feet and 10 new gates, positioning the airport to handle future passenger growth. CLT’s demand-driven approach to construction ensures that expansions align with traffic needs, reinforcing its status as one of the world’s busiest airport. This project not only marks a period of growth but underscores a commitment to improving the travel experience. Integral to the expansion is the use of terrazzo flooring, which combines durability with artistic expression.

Doyle Dickerson Terrazzo installed 44,000 sq ft of epoxy terrazzo, that repeated the design from Phase I but with new design elements. A standout feature is the large-scale airplane logo, with the actual tail of a plane embedded into the floor. This aircraft was salvaged from Roswell, New Mexico, and now holds a permanent place in the epoxy terrazzo floor. In collaboration with a local artist, Doyle Dickerson Terrazzo brought the Wright Brothers’ legacy to life, embedding seven medallions into the terrazzo, each representing a key milestone in their journey. The use of specialty aggregates, including brass shavings, adds a warm gold shimmer that creates a dynamic visual experience as travelers walk across the floor.
